Leave your hire car and take to the water on a cruise along the River Ness. From there you’ll see the imposing form of the 19th century Inverness Castle which replaced one destroyed by the Jacobites. Today it’s the local sheriff’s court. The city’s museum is of interest as, in modernising and expanding, it now offering many interactive displays of local and national history.
Finally, drive out to the memorial to the Battle of Culloden. Fought there in 1746, it was the beginning of the end for Bonnie Prince Charlie’s attempt to overthrow the English monarchy.

The northern Scottish city of Inverness is known as the capital of the Highlands of Scotland. Inverness was built on the River Ness and in Gaelic the city’s name means ‘mouth of the River Ness’. The river is connected to the nearby Loch Ness, which is world famous for supposed sightings of the Loch Ness monster. Inverness also overlooks the Moray Firth and the Beauly Firth.
The city is known for its high quality of life and the fact that it is rapidly expanding. Visitors to Inverness will find the conveniences they need from high street and independent shops selling all kinds of clothes and products to an eclectic range of different restaurants and bars.
One of the pretty sights to see in Inverness is Inverness Castle which is as beautiful a medieval castle as you will find anywhere in Scotland. The closest other city to Inverness is Aberdeen which is more than an hours drive to the east. Should you wish to go to Aberdeen Airport, which is called Aberdeen-Dyce, Rhino cars can be rented there allowing you to drive the short distance of around seven kilometres into the city. Aberdeen Dyce has connections with Amsterdam, Paris, and London as well as quite a few other destinations in the UK.
Major roads in the vicinity of Inverness are the A9, the A96, the A82 (which goes from Glasgow to Inverness), the A862, the B862, the B853 and the B861.
There are currently plans afoot to create a bypass road known as the Inverness Trunk Link Road which is supposed to relieve traffic congestion within the city itself. The bypass will ink the A92, A9 and A82 roads together. The post code district for Inverness is IV1 – IV3 if you are trying to find the town using a satellite navigation system.
