Mini Guide Braganca
Braganca lies in north east Portugal on the banks of the Sabor River and near to the Culebra mountains. Situated some 700 metres above sea level, Braganca was originally a Celtic city which later accommodated the houses of the Kings of Portugal.
The city has a small airport, the Aérodromo de Bragança which does domestic flights to Vila Real and Lisbon Airport.
The airport lies in the north of the city near Aveleda and Montesinho national park. However, Bragança and Viseu are the only two Portuguese district capital cities without rail service so it is useful to have car here.
To get to Bragança, take the Estrada IP4 which links Bragança with Mirandela, Vila Real, Amarante, Penafiel and Porto. You can also travel by road to the cities of Chaves, Valpaços, Macedo de Cavaleiros and Miranda do Douro as well as Vinhais, Vimioso and the international border at Quintanilha.
Because of its altitude it is important to take the weather into account when traveling to Braganca. It can get quite cold in January and though the summer temperatures reach 28 Celsius, summers are generally short. And Bracanga will have on average 140 days of rain or snow per year so is not as ideal as other parts of Portugal for people looking for unadulterated sunshine.
