Aveiro Mini Guide
Aveiro is known as the Portuguese Venice because of its beautiful winding canals and old buildings built alongside the water. The city has around 70,000 residents and is the second most populated city in the Centro region of Portugal. This once great seaport practised cod fishing as a main part of its industry until a great storm silted up the harbour put an end to this, although small boats called ‘moliceiros’ still collect seaweed from the ocean. The town is linked to the Atlantic by a lagoon called the Ria.
Along the coastline there are picturesque and colourful buildings in an art nouveau style which along with the fisherman’s cottages make Aveiro very pleasing on the eye. Should you rent a car there are some charming sights to see in the towns surrounding Aveiro. If you travel eight kilometres to the south of Aveiro you will come to the small town of Ilhavo which has an interesting maritime museum. Once you are here you can see the Vista Alegre Museum which traces the history of Vista Alegre porcelain from the 1850s to the present day. There is also pretty chapel which was built near the property.
Directly to the east of Aveiro are the two towns of Vouzela and São Pedro do Sul. The architecture of the houses in these two towns reflects the considerable wealth gained by the residents from ploughing the fertile valley of the Rio Vouga. The nearby Castelo de Paiva is set on a hill amongst vineyards and is a great place to see views of the countryside. If you want to enjoy the good weather of the region head to the Espinho beach which is to the north of the main town. Inland from Espinho is Santa Maria da Feira, a town which was named after the prosperous fairs that were held there every month since the 12th century. There is a beautiful castle perched atop a hill here too.
If you head south you will reach Mealhada which has good restaurants which serve a local delicacy – roast suckling pig.
Luxury accommodation in Aveiro includes the four star Hotel As Americas, an old building which has been adapted in a modern style and encompasses a bar, breakfast room and games room. The Vivienda Adelaide is a self catering option with five bedrooms and three bathrooms which can hold around 10 persons. It is located in Nogueiró, near Arouca in the rustic Portuguese countryside.
