It’s a fantastic place to visit. It’s the southernmost city in Holland and is very close to Belgium and Germany. In fact, whilst there, you can walk to Belgium and cycle to Germany! The city has a great old quarter with cobbled narrow lanes and dramatic squares, illuminated at night. The Vrijthof holds the two most important ecclesiastical buildings of the city including the huge St Servaas Church. There’s also the St Pietersberg Caves, reachable by boat, which has thousands of passages which have been used at times as hiding places and shelters.
How do I get to Maastricht?
Maastricht has its own airport which is six miles from the city and the second busiest cargo airport in the country. There are flights to Maastricht from all over Europe and Turkey but no direct flights from the UK. The best method of getting there from Britain is to fly to Berlin and get a connecting flight, especially as budget airlines operate on both legs of the journey. From the airport to the city centre is an easy journey either by bus, taxi or hire car.
What can I Expect When I get to Maastricht Airport?
The airport terminal is quite small as the main operations there are for cargo handling. Next to the terminal building is a hotel called the Tulip Inn which is nearly as big as the terminal building itself. Facilities are quite good at the airport, despite its size. Once you’ve disembarked, you’re likely to have to walk to the terminal building and after passport control and baggage reclaim you’ll be in the arrivals hall which is shared with departures.
If you need information about the airport’s facilities, the information desk is right in the middle of the hall and the helpful staff there can also advise on transportation into the city. If you’ve arranged to collect a hire car at the airport the desks are in the far left hand corner of the arrivals hall. There, you’ll be able to finish off the paperwork before getting underway. Public transport is easily accessible and can take you to the city centre via different routes including Beek railway station for connections to other Dutch cities. If you need cash there’s an ATM outside the terminal as you turn left from the exit.
What About on my Return Journey?
The airport prides itself on its facilities despite its size and after you’ve checked in you can have a meal in any of the outlets of Travel Inn within the landside part of the terminal. The differing outlets sell either hot or cold snacks or offer a full a la carte menu. For more choice still, you can go to the restaurant of the Tulip Inn immediately next to the terminal building. After security there are two more food outlets offering snack food and hot and cold drinks. Once you’ve satisfied your hunger you can shop in either the duty free shop for spirits, tobacco and gifts or try the AKO airport shop which caters for many of the necessities of travellers including reading material for your flight. There are currently no Wi-Fi facilities at the airport.
