Klaipeda in Lithuania has a population of approximately 230,000 and is a busy seaport city. The port is the only one in Lithuania and runs ferries to and from Sweden and Germany as well as cargo. The city has its own small airport but international visitors and flights are catered for by Palanga Airport. The city has gone by several names over the years as political changes occurred. Some of these names are Memelburg, Memel, Caloypede and Klawppeda.
The city has some notable points of interest for tourists visiting the city, mostly the striking architecture and buildings. Visitors usually find time to visit places such as Memelberg Castle. Other popular tourist spots include Zarde ancient settlement, the maritime museum and the Old Dutch defence system around the town. The city has several museums. These include Pilies muziejus, Mažosios Lietuvos istorijos muziejus, Kalvyst?s muziejus, Lietuvos j?r? muziejus ir delfinariumas, Laikrodži? muziejus and Kurši? nerijos nacionalinio parko Gamtos muziejus.
For visitors that want to spend some time shopping there are plenty of shopping centres to cater for every whim. Some ones of note include Akropolis, Arena, Banginis and BIG. The city also has a reasonable nightlife with plenty of bars, restaurants and clubs that cater for visitors. The climate in the summer months is very hospitable with sunny days and warm evenings. The winter months can get very cold with temperatures dropping down to low temperatures around -5 degrees. Temperatures have been known to drop as low as -33 degrees in the winter!
