Skiathos Airport Mini Guide
Why Should I go to Skiathos?
It’s a beautiful, green island just off the east coast of mainland Greece and a popular destination for sun and relaxing holidays. It has a little bit of history worth exploring too with the centre of the island accommodating a medieval town which is now abandoned, called Kastro, which means ‘centre’ Although widely visited by tourists, early or late in the day is the best time to visit as it is almost silent there. The island also prides itself on its nature trails and it’s possible to do a series of short or longer hikes around Skiathos. They are not recommended for the hot summer months.
How do I get to Skiathos?
There are dozens of seasonal charter holiday flights from the UK and other European cities and some year round scheduled flights from Athens
What is the Airport Like?
It is small and modern but with virtually no facilities so you won’t want to spend long there. Arriving at the airport can be quite dramatic too as the runway is one of the shortest and narrowest in Greece. Pilots need additional training to be able to fly there and from their viewpoint it looks like they’ll go off the end and into the sea because of the drop off of the end of the runway.
What can I Expect When I Disembark?
It’s small so it’s going to be crowded and you’ll need to be patient to get through passport control and on to collecting your luggage. This too can be chaotic if flights come in close together. If you lose a case, you’ll have to ask a member of the airport staff as there’s no information desk or lost luggage point. The staff can also help with other airport issues too. Unless you have an operator organised transfer booked, the only way from the airport to your destination is by taxi or hire car. The monopoly means that taxi charges can be higher than you’d expect. If you’ve pre-booked a hire car then the desks are next to the terminal doors. There are no banking facilities at all in the terminal so you’ll have to wait for cash until you reach Skiathos Town unless you’ve brought euros with you.
And What About When I Depart Skiathos?
You need to be well prepared before arriving at the airport. If travelling with children, make sure they have enough to occupy themselves and bring refreshments as there’s only a small kiosk selling pre-packaged food and drink. You won’t find a duty free here either, nor any other shops and so it’ll be settling down to finish the novel you brought with you and hoping that there aren’t any delays.
