Corfu Mini Guide
Corfu is an island off the north west coast of Greece in the Adriatic Sea which enjoys warm Mediterranean weather. With its fine climate and marvellous beaches, Corfu is the perfect place for couples to spend some time alone or for the whole family to holiday together.
This Ionian island is popular all year around, though the bulk of tourists head there during summer. Other good times to go are during spring when the island is full of flowers, for the colourful Easter celebrations or towards the end of the year when grapes are being harvested to make wine.
No matter what time of year it is, Corfu is easily accessible flying from Athens Airport
with Olympic Airlines or Aegean Airlines. Other airlines which go to Corfu are Air Berlin, German Wings, Transavia, LTU and TuiFly. There are also low cost flights with the companies Wizzair and easyJet.
Ioannis Kapodistrias is the name of Corfu’s airport where you are able to pick up Rhino hire cars. Having a car is certainly the best way to get around the island at your own pace and we can make sure that your vehicle has air conditioning for you during the sweltering summer heat.
Once you are able to get around the island at your own convenience there is plenty to see and do. You can practice a number of water sports on the beaches or stick to the time honoured holiday traditions of swimming and sun bathing. If you are not a fan of salt water there is also a water park called Aqualand on the island. Elsewhere, the island says it's the home of aeromodelling and on the beach near Gouvia you'll find model buffs plying their craft in the skies. Walking is also a popular activity in the valleys of the unspoilt centre of the island. You can pick up guide books with many marked trails from shops in Corfu town.
There are quaint fishing villages dotted around Corfu too which are good places to find tavernas serving authentic Greek cooking and fresh seafood. Meanwhile quite a few of the bars do Karaoke at night for those who want to entertain themselves. An interesting sight to see in Corfu is a palace built by an Austrian Empress, the palace of Achilleion.
Those looking for a cheap holiday will be pleased to know that there are back packing options in Corfu such as the massive pink and very lively Pink Palace in Agios Gordos on the West coast. Also on the west coast, but a bit more sedate, is Sunrock. Because of Corfu’s position at the foot of the Adriatic Sea another way to approach the island is to take a ferry from nearby Italian cities such as Venice, Ancona and Bari.
this year with Easter festivals and parades taking place across Corfu. This can be a great time to visit Corfu and experience the customs and traditions.
- Rather bizarrely, Corfu is a great place to watch competitive cricket. A throwback to the days when it was British, five teams play a league at the cricket ground in Corfu town and it's a great, relaxing way to spend an afternoon.
