Caen Mini-Guide
The French city of Caen is one of the first stops you might come to having taken the ferry over from England. It is situated about 15 kilometres inland from the English Channel.
Most of the tourists who come to Caen do so to pay their respects to the fallen soldiers at the Battle of Normandy. There is also the memorial for peace museum which is worth visiting. Caen was almost totally flattened during World War Two and had to be rebuilt. Despite there are two beautiful old cathedrals still standing which are a joy to behold.

The quickest ferry route you can take is from Portsmouth in England to Ouistreham in France. From there it is a 20 minute journey to Caen by car.
You can also drive to Caen from France’s capital Paris within two hours along the A13 motorway. Other routes are to come from Rennes on the A84, Cherbourg on the N13, Tours and Le Mans via the N138 by way of the N158 at Sees, and Rouen via the N175 or A13.
The nearest airport to Caen is Carpiquet in Lower Normandy which has a great number of flights going all over Europe.
Located in the north west of France, and just to the south of Le Havre, Caen is known mainly as a college city. It is also the capital of the Basse - Normandie region and has a population of just over 100,000 people.
One of its most major sights is the Chateau de Caen, a castle which was built in 1066 by William the Conqueror. But with plenty of churches, museums and some botanical gardens it is easy enough to pass your time pleasantly in Caen.
