Bastia Airport (BIA) or Bastia – Poretta Airport is a small international airport which is located in the north east of Corsica. Why do I Want to go to Bastia?
Perhaps you’re following in the footsteps of Lord Nelson who took over the city briefly in the 19th century? It could be that you are interested in the delightfully run down old buildings that surround the harbour giving it a wonderful ‘days gone by’ feel contrasting with the million-dollar luxury yachts that bob in its marina. You may even have gone there, drawn by reports of the quality of its wines, famed throughout the island. Finally, if you intend hiring a car you may be going for the dramatic scenery of Cap Corse, the finger like promontory in the north east of the island.
So how do I get to This Jewel of the Mediterranean?
Bastia has its own airport called Poretta Airport which is eleven miles away from the city. There are seasonal flights from all over Europe including two easyJet flights from UK airports; Manchester and Heathrow. Out of season the airport is only reached by connecting flights from the UK to Paris or Lyon. Once at the airport you can take the shuttle bus for a 35 minute journey into Bastia for around nine euros.

It’s a reasonably modern regional airport with a limited range of facilities but is quite light and airy inside.
What is the Procedure Once I’ve Landed?
The limitations of the airport mean that you’ll have a short walk to the terminal so if mobility is an issue, ask your airline well in advance so they can organise assistance for you. After passport control and having collected your luggage you’ll find yourself in the arrivals hall. There’s an information desk that as well as giving flight details and directions around the airport can also advise on tourist matters including suggesting accommodation and transportation. If you’ve arranged to collect a hire car from the airport, they’ll also be able to direct you to the company desks which are tucked under the sloping roof and have illuminated signs.
If you’re going to be using public transport then you have the choice of the shuttle bus that goes via Bastia railway station or a taxi into the city. There are no banks at the airport but you will find an ATM should you require euros urgently.
What can I do at the Airport Whilst Waiting for my Departure?
After you’ve checked your bags in and collected the boarding passes for your journey you have a limited selection of shops and restaurants to choose from. The shops are confined to local products, crafts, gifts and music or a kiosk selling newspapers, books and magazines together with packaged snacks. After looking through these shops you can enjoy a meal at the restaurant which mainly serves hot snacks and take away style food. One pleasant surprise there is that you are able to connect, free of charge, to the airport’s Wi-Fi system if you have a wireless laptop, netbook or mobile phone.
