With Car hire Avignon Airport you can see the main sights of the area and its surroundings. Within the village of Montfavet is where the airport is located, however the city of Avington is only 6 miles away and can be easily accessed by the RN7 main road. Other great links to the city are the A7 Motorway where you will clearly see an exit sign for Avignon Sud.

Car rental is a popular way to see the area as the airport lacks public transport so the only other option would be a taxi, which unfortunately is quite expensive with fares starting at 15 euros.

The airport itself is sufficient, although small compared to some international airports it now has the ability to handle two simultaneous flights due to the expansion of its reception area. There are a great range of flights everyday with airlines such as Flybe and Jet2 going to and from the UK and Europe.

After landing and making your way to the city, you can find a good range of interesting sites. Palais des Papes is where most tourist visit, the English translation is Palace of the Popes. Guests can choose to see the interior and exterior of the cream colored building with a tour guide who will provided informative information or you can purchase a cassette and wonder around the attraction at your own pace. The palace was home to several popes and was built on a rocked outcrop which overlooks the River Rhone, around 1335 to 1364.

In contrast to the old palace the city does has its share of modern high streets shops and resturaunts due to the presence of its university, the city has many young adults enjoying the attractions.

Other sites include the Musee du Petit Palais and Pont St Benezet.

Avignon lies on the banks of the Rhone River in the Provence area of southern France. It is the location of the famous Pont D’Avignon, from the French song. The bridge was said to have been built by a shepherd who was guided by angels.

Indeed Avignon has a fascinating history and it is where the Popes fled in the 14th century as they sought to get away from the corruption of  Rome. A reminder of their time there is the Palace of Popes which was considered the world’s largest Gothic building.

A good time to visit Avignon is during its world famous street theatre festival when the city fills with colourful performers and all varieties of entertainment.
Avignon is certainly a good place in which to have a car as there are some fine surroundings to see including some which are designated as World Heritage Sights. Go to Arles and see ancient Roman and Romanesque monuments or the huge Roman Amphitheatre and Greek temple at Nimes. There are more Roman theatres to the north in Orange.

A map of the city of Avignon lists ideas for places to stay, eat and go on day or night trips to. Pick one up from the Office de Tourisme in 41 Cours Jean Jaures.
