Oulu is the main city of the Northern Ostrobothnia region of Finland. The city was extensively rebuilt after a fire destroyed most of it in the 19th century. It remains very attractive and by the river estuary there is an outdoor area of bridges which connect islands and pretty little fountains.
Mannerheim and Ainola Park are great places to go for a stroll while a number of museums showcase the art and industry of Oulu. Today the most unusual event which takes place in Oulu is the World Air Guitar Championships. Tourists can also see the large Tietomaa Science Centre.
