Santiago is one of the lushest parts of the island as it is protected from hurricanes by the encircling mountains. The city has a rich industrial heritage but is also steeped in the history of the island’s development.
Pay a visit to El Monumento Santiago which honours those who fought in the Restoration War between the islanders and the Spanish. Next to it, a museum is being constructed that will explain the sacrifices made in greater detail. You can’t miss the monument perched high on the tallest hill in the city and easily reached with a hire car.
Santiago Mini Guide
Santiago is a province in the Caribbean of the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic is a very interesting country as it forms the eastern half of an island that is split down the middle.

On the other side is Haiti, which is one of the poorest countries in the world and recently suffered an earthquake.
Yet the Dominican Republic has been well preserved and some of the fantastic architecture in the centre of the main city is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site including the impressive cathedral.
These buildings are a reminder of the period of Spanish rule over this Caribbean country. Known mainly for its industrial production of cigars, cigarettes and rum, nevertheless hiring a car gives you the opportunity to see things you wouldn't normally see by getting out into the amazing countryside.

The Dominican Republic also has the second largest economy in the Caribbean, partly based on sugar output.
Part of the attraction for business travellers to Santiago is the fact that it is an economic Free Zone. Among the four free zones there is also a cement factory.
