This fortunate country, lying between the North Sea and the entrance to the Baltic Sea, is one of Europe's smallest states, slightly bigger than Switzerland.
The Faeroe Island and the vast, largely ice covered island of Greenland remains Danish, but are largely self-governing.
LAND AND SEA
Denmark itself consists of a western peninsula and an eastern archipelago of 406 islands of which 89 are populated. It is a low-lying land - the highest point is 171 m (561 ft) above sea level. It is the most dissected country in Europe and has an immensely long coast 7300 km (about 4500 miles).
The country faces the North Sea in broad beaches which are the longest in Europe. Artificial harbours, such as ESBJERG in the south and Hanstholm in the north, had to be built because the coast offers little natural shelter for ships. Behind a coastal rampart of dunes lie flat, sandy heath lands, largely reclaimed from the sea, and peat bog, much of which has been drained. Plantations and belts of spruce and pines act as windbreaks against the strong westerly winds.
East Jutland offers a landscape of steep, low hills, with beech clad slope, its coast broken by broad inlets. At the heads of these inlets are old ports and market towns as well as Jutland's biggest cities, ARHUS and ALBORG.
East of Jutland lies a jigsaw of islands.
The second largest, FUNEN (Fyn), is linked to Jutland by bridges. Funen is called The Garden of Denmark because of its flowery villages with their pastel-painted farmhouse. To the east is the largest island, Zealand (Sjaelland), linked to Funen by a shuttle service of train and car ferries.
The capital, COPENHAGEN, is on the eastern shore of Zealand, as far away as possible from the Jutland mainland, but strategically placed on the Oresund strait between Denmark and Sweden. At the northern approach to the Oresund stands ELSINORE (Helsingor), the setting for Shakespeare's tragedy Hall/let. Prince of Denmark. The most isolated Danish island, Bornholm, is several hours' ferry journey across the Baltic from the capital.
MAGNIFICENT CASTLES
The happy picture is reflected in a landscape of well-manicured farmland and woodland, brick-built farmhouses with capacious barns, whitewashed churches, handsome manor houses and magnificent castles. In the towns, public gardens are overflowing with flowers; red and white flags (the national colours) flutter from the main buildings; and bright shop front convey an air of calm prosperity. Cyclists stream through the streets; there are nearly 400 000 cycles in use, in addition to a car for every two or three people. Danish food is another happy experience - the open sandwich (smorrebrod) piled high with the products of farm and fishery - extravagant pastries, akvavit, cherry brandy and lagers.
Car Hire Tips
Before you leave home please make sure you take your driving licence, i.e. the plastic card and the counterpart if you hold the new style UK driving licence as to be able to release your car hire it will need to be produced at the
Car Hire Denmark Check- in desk.
Depending on the country in which you are driving the side of the road to drive could be different to that which you normally drive on so check this out in advance. Most of the European countries and the USA drive on the righthand side of the road, but the UK, Cyprus, Malta and Australia drive on the left.
Many roads have tolls so make sure you have some small change ready in the country currency.
Remember you may wish to book a vehicle with air conditioning if you are journeying in a country with a hot climate, or likewise you may need to ensure you have winter tyres for winter venues/ski resorts. Winter Tyres and Snow Chains are generally arranged direct with the local Car Hire supplier.
Rhino Car Hire offer a range of vehicles which are automatic, please select this option when booking your automatic car hire vehicle. Usually with automatic vehicles you need to put the automatic gear shift into P for Park before you can remove the ignition keys.
Remember to have a credit card with available funds to hand as optional car hire extras, i.e. child safety seats will have to be purchased with a credit card.
