Antigua Mini Guide
The laid back island of Antigua is most famous for having 365 beaches, one for every day of the year.
Antigua is part of two islands, Antigua and Barbuda which are situated in the peaceful waters of the Caribbean Sea. The island’s economy is geared towards tourism with this being the main source of income for its inhabitants.
The only city on the island is its capital St John which is full of colourful characters and good places to eat and drink.
Antigua hotels mainly cater to a fairly wealthy class of traveller but there are some all inclusive options which can help to save the pennies.
Many tourists who come to Antigua do so to watch the cricket. The island has produced some legends, most notably the cavalier batsman Sir Vivian Richards, after whom the new stadium was named, and the lithe fast bowlers Andy Roberts and Curtly Ambrose. Although the new stadium has had massive problems recently, one way or another there will always be a test match cricket ground in Antigua. It is a great place to soak up the sun and down a rum or two while watching the day’s play unfold. If you come during the summer visit the old cricket ground, the Antigua Recreation Ground (which is much loved by locals and may yet find a new lease of life), as this is where the carnival festivities are put on.
Although you can come into Antigua by cruise ship, most tourists come there via VC Bird International airport which is situated on the outskirts of St John's in the north of the island.
You can get there from England and America on a number of different airlines such as Virgin Atlantic, British Airways, American Airlines, Delta Airlines and Continental Airlines among others. Air Canada has flights to Toronto while it was possible to go Paris with Air France and Amsterdam with KLM.
