Yemen Mini Guide

Situated at the Southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula, Yemen is a Middle Eastern Country which has borders with Oman and Saudi Arabia. The country has a troubled history and travel to certain parts of Yemen is sometimes not advised because of a threat of terrorist attacks. You should check with the foreign office before planning your journey. Also make sure you are familiar with the local customs. For instance, homosexuals are given the death sentence in Yemen if caught.

That said, the people in Yemen are friendly even though it is a very different country from its neighbouring countries the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. Arabic is the local language here. Should the situation calm down in the future, Yemen is well worth visiting as it has an incredible coastline and stunning regions of mountains, highlands and coastal plains. Historically many traders have passed through Yemen because it was on the old spice routes. Though it can get chilly in the elevated areas Yemen is mostly desert and its conditions are accordingly hot.

Aden City in Yemen

To get to Yemen by plane there are quite a few options. Emirates Air flies from Dubai to Sana’a and back five times a week and the flight takes just over two hours. Royal Jordanian flies twice weekly from Amman to Sana’a and to Aden. Syrian air lines also flies to Sana'a.

The national carrier, Yemenia, flies to Sana'a from many mid-Eastern and several European capitals, including a daily non-stop from Cairo. Lufthansa flies from Frankfurt three times weekly with a stop in Cairo. The flight time to Sana'a from Cairo is about three hours. Budget airline Air Arabia also flies from Sharjah (near Dubai) to Sana'a on Tuesdays and Saturdays, while Qatar Air flies between Doha and Sana’a three times a week.

You can drive from Oman to Yemen, though this is not advised as crossing the border can be tricky. Driving from Saudi Arabia is not easy either and there are complicated regulations about getting a car across the Saudi border. If you want to really explore what this country has offer a four by four is your best choice of vehicle. First you need to get a travel permit from the tourism authorities specifying where you are going and for how long. This is a very necessary inconvenience in case you run into any areas where there may be tribal unrest.
