Car Hire in the Greek Islands
Soaked in centuries of mythology and basking in the warm glow of the summer sun, the Greek Islands are an understandably popular holiday choice.
But be sure to plan well in advance if you plan to go. Not only do holiday packages on the Greek Islands book up fast but there are a bewilderingly large number of islands to choose from which all have unique characteristics and may even sit in different seas.
The largest of the Greek Islands is the island of Crete which sits in the Mediterranean Sea between the Libyan Sea and the Sea of Crete. Car hire Crete is the most effective way to get around this island which has everything the tourist could hope for in terms of entertainments and amenities as well as being stunningly beautiful.
The capital of Crete is the city of Heraklion but this is also the name of one of its four prefectures – the others being Lasithi, Rethimno and Chania. Crete’s airport, Heraklion International Airport, is the main transport hub on the island.
The combination of some of the world’s most incredible archaeological sites and dazzling sandy beaches is sure to prove bewitching to the first time visitor to Crete. Day trips on Crete can be to a number of places including the Minoan archaeological sites of Knossos or the numerous Byzantine churches and monasteries on the island. In terms of places to go walking the Samaria Gorge is nothing less than spellbinding and the 14 kilometre hike will take you down 1250 metres as it descends towards the sea.
But many people prefer to kick back, relax and enjoy a drink in the harbour town of Chersonissos or head out to the buzzing Malia resort where there are bars and nightclubs aplenty.
In a different sea and with a different vibe is the island of Corfu. Corfu lies in the Ionian Sea to south west of Albania and the east of Italy off of Greece’s north western coast.
Although being in a separate part of Europe Corfu also has a gorgeous Mediterranean climate with guaranteed warm weather in the summer. This is not the only good time of year to go however, and Corfu is incredibly pretty in the spring while the island’s Easter celebrations are very special.
