Sana'a Mini Guide

Where is Sana’a?
Sana’a is the capital of Yemen, one of the poorest Middle Eastern countries as it has only a limited oil industry. It is one of the world’s longest continually inhabited cities and much of the old city is a UNESCO Heritage Site for its unusual buildings. Currently it’s undergoing political turmoil and care needs to be exercised when visiting it.

How do I get Into Sana’a?
El Rahaba Airport serves the city of Sana’a and accepts flights mainly from Middle Eastern countries. There’s a single flight from Europe with Yemenia from Frankfurt Airport and travellers from other parts of Europe can connect there for a direct flight or take a flight to Dubai and connect to Sana’a from Dubai. Transfers into Sana’a are very basic including unmetered taxis for which you’ll need to negotiate a fare before setting off or the very rickety local bus.

What is There to See or Do in Sana’a?
Despite there being a certain level of risk in travelling around Sana’a, there is still plenty that should be seen. In the city, the main gate, called Bab-el-Yemen is the entrance to the old city. In the old city you’ll find the Great Mosque where the oldest known copy of the Quran was found. Outside the city you’ll find the Wadi Dhahr, where, atop a rock pinnacle, is perched the palace of the Imam of Yemen.
