Worthing Mini Guide
What can you Tell me About Worthing and Lancing?
It’s one of the oldest inhabited places in the UK with evidence dating back six thousand years that people lived and worked there. It’s also a seaside town that has only just woken up to the benefits of being a holiday resort; prior to that it was the location of choice for retirees from London
who wanted a mild climate and the sea air. It’s large, over 100,000 people live there and it’s a centre for financial services. As a tourist destination it has lots of interesting attractions too. Lancing is Worthing’s sleepy neighbour, a former holiday resort but one which is now content to slumber.
How do I get to Worthing and Lancing?
The best way to get to Worthing and Lancing from abroad is to fly into Gatwick Airport
which is around thirty minutes away. Flights arrive there from all over the world so you won’t be stuck for a way to get to enjoy the Sussex countryside. You can hire a car at the airport and drive to Worthing or get on the Victoria line train and change at Horsham for Worthing. Once in the town you can hire a car there too.
What can I do in Worthing and Lancing?
Lancing is simply a place to take things easy. It’s got a nice beach and seafront but little else. Worthing has a lot more to offer including the annual ‘Birdman’ festival. There’s even a replica of the Sistine Chapel in the local church dedicated to the English martyrs. Art is popular in the town and there are several galleries plus an ‘open house’ event to display art and craft in people’s homes. Out of the town you have the walking country of the South Downs Way and Highdown Hill, part of the downs, from where you’ll get a magnificent view of the town.
- For an exhibition of the idiotic, if somewhat amusing, be on the harbourside for the Worthing International Birdman Competition. The foolhardy will be dressed as birds and attempt to win a cash prize for achieving flight over a marked distance. It takes place on the 10th and 11th of August.
