Wellingborough Mini Guide
Where is Wellingborough?
Wellingborough is a market town in Northamptonshire and is situated on the River Nene. It is located 18km from the town of
Northampton. The town was founded in the early 6th century Saxon period and was known as ‘Wendelingburgh’.
How Would I get There?
It is a commuter town, so there is a regular train service from
London St Pancras and the Eurostar connects the town to Europe. East Midlands Trains operate the service every 30 minutes daily and the journey into London takes less than an hour. If you are driving in the area, the A45 links Wellingborough with
Peterborough and Northampton. Stagecoach and First buses can be used to get to the town from the surrounding area. From further afield, you can travel there quite easily as four airports are within a 2 hour drive.
What Can I see in the Town?
All Hallows Church is the oldest building in the town and dates from 1160. The Jacobean Croyland Abbey is also nearby and you can find out more about the town’s history at the Wellingborough Museum. Look out for the ‘3 Silver Ladies’ sculptures on Harrowden Road, they depict Roman history and the river and townspeople working together.
What is There to do?
You can do some shopping at Swansgate Shopping Centre or browse the stalls of the market, held three times a week. If you fancy a round of golf, you can play at the Wellingborough Golf Club. In the evening you can see a play or dance show at the Castle Theatre.
A Must see…
If you are there in July or August, a must visit is Althorp House. You can stroll in the beautiful gardens and see the nineteen family rooms used by the Althorp family for 500 years. There you can also see the exhibition ‘Diana- A Celebration’ about the life and work of Diana, Princess of Wales.
Something Different
Spend a day out at Billing Aquadrome, it is a holiday park with a marina and swimming pools. You can also go fishing or take a walking trail or do some water sports or climbing.
Staying There
The historic Hind Hotel is a 17th century coaching inn in the town centre. It has a restaurant and lounge bar as well as a coffee shop. Free Wi-Fi is available in public areas.
15/05/13 - On the 6th July, Croyland Park in Wellingborough will host this year's Wellingborough Carnival and the accompanying Party in the Park. The event will be opened by the Mayor at 1 pm and after the carnival procession has passed, the music from the bands will begin.
