Croydon Mini Guide

What can you Tell me About Croydon?
Croydon has a very interesting past and a number of attractions that make it still an appealing place to visit. The town is mentioned in the Domesday Book but is much older. The name comes from the Anglo-Saxon ‘croeas deanas’ which means ‘valley of the crocuses’. It is believed that the town was an important area for the collection and trade in saffron. It was the site of the original London Airport and has, what was at its inception, the largest shopping centre in Europe.

How do I get to Croydon?
If you are flying in to the UK or coming from some distance within the country you should arrive at Heathrow. From there you can take a bus or train connection to Croydon centre. A cheaper option is to consider using the train from the London Victoria terminus. Within Croydon itself there are many bus stops and train stations so cheap, reliable transport is never a problem.

What Should I try to see in Croydon?
There are lots of things to see and do in Croydon. The old London Airport is a major attraction for fans of air travel and the main terminal building, now a hotel, has a small museum with some fascinating artefacts. You can also visit the Nestle Tower, one of Britain’s tallest buildings or, for a taste of the history of the area, spend an afternoon at Shirley Windmill, a still working example of the mills that used to dot the Surrey countryside. Finally, visit Addington Palace, a stately home and the residence of Archbishops for several centuries. Croydon has a thriving music scene covering all genres. Check out flyers and the local library for details of upcoming concerts while you're there.

And if I Want to get out of Croydon?
You have the option of a very short rail journey into Charing Cross or London Victoria or in the other direction the rolling countryside of Surrey and the North Downs.

For a borough that is now absorbed into the Greater London area, Croydon has a surprising amount of attractions. You can visit what used to be London’s airport, Croydon Airport which was superseded by Heathrow. Today the site is a tourist attraction with a small museum detailing its history.

For families with children the Museum of Croydon is a great place to visit with regular new exhibitions dedicated to things of interest to children including authors and hands on science. Finally, heading south from Croydon in a hire car you’ll soon be in the rolling countryside of the North Downs.
