A Mini Guide to Chester
What can you Tell me About Chester?
It’s the county town of Cheshire and is located close to the border of
Wales. It’s also within easy driving distance of
Liverpool and Manchester meaning that it’s a good base for exploring the northwest of England. The city dates back to Roman times and there are plenty of Roman remains to be seen in the city and the city museum as well as great shopping in the part of town known as The Rows.
How do I get to Chester?
Two airports are within an hour of Chester and both have good rail links to the city. Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport isn’t as big as Manchester and has many fewer flights but it’s possible to reach Chester through
Liverpool Airport from many European cities.
Manchester Airport is a better bet if you’re travelling from the
US with several American airports having routes to Manchester. Once at the airports, take the train to Chester where you’ll find your pre-booked Chester hire car waiting for you.
What can I do in Chester?
There’s a lot to squeeze in so you’d better be fit. See the Roman parts of the city inside the city walls, the amphitheatre and Spud U Like – yes you heard it right for in the outlet’s basement is the entrance to the city’s Roman hypocaust. Out in the fresh air again, hire a boat for a leisurely row down the Dee or, to ensure you keep your feet dry, walk the Groves, the promenade that tracks the Dee through Chester.
- Grosvenor Park is the venue this summer for Chester's Shakespeare Festival. From the 6th July to the 18th August you can watch a production of Twelfth Night and return the next day to see a sequel written by acclaimed playwright Glyn Maxwell.
