Barking Mini Guide
What can you Tell me About Barking?
Once a fishing village that also relied on agriculture, Barking developed as the railway system grew. It became one of the first council house regions of London in the 1920s and the increased population of mostly manual workers helped the industry that grew south of the borough. Today it is a busy commuter area with shopping and services its main focus.
How Easy is it to get to Barking?
Being on the north east of London, it’s not easy to get to Barking from the two major London airports,
Heathrow or
Gatwick although the extensive rail and underground network means that with several changes, Barking can be reached in an hour from either. The best air access is from London’s
Stansted Airport which still gives access to a wide range of international flights including many from budget airline Ryanair. Hiring a car from
Stansted Airport is a convenient way to make your onward journey if you want to avoid public transport and Rhino can take car of that for you.
What is There to see and do in and Around Barking?
There’s very little of note to see in Barking itself apart from the ruins of the abbey which had a colourful history, finally being destroyed by Henry VIII. All that remains above the foundation is the Curfew Tower that now acts as a gateway in the Abbey Park. Further south, attractions such as the O2 Arena can be reached which has a variety of sporting, musical and other events hosted there regularly. You’re also not far from historic Greenwich, home of the meridian line and the Cutty Sark.
