Why Should I Fly to Donetsk Airport?
It’s the closest airport to where England are playing two of their group stage matches so if you’re an England fan and want to be there then Donetsk Airport is where you want to get to. There are no scheduled flights there from the UK so you’ll either have to book one of the flights chartered by the supporter’s association or tour companies or fly into Zhuliany or Boryspil Airports in Kiev
and take a connecting flight. To the centre from the airport is a short but packed bus journey, an expensive taxi ride or best completed by pre-booked car hire collected at Donetsk Airport.
What is the Airport Like?
It was built in the 1950s and then rebuilt by Ukraine’s Soviet masters in 1973. Today it has had little improvement since then apart from a basic repaint but overall still looks surprisingly modern. A new terminal is nearing completion, hoped to be ready in time for the Euro 2012 finals which will improve matters significantly. In addition there’ll be a new runway, rebuilt control tower and an increased number of aircraft stands on the reconstructed apron.
What are the Facilities Like for Passengers at Donetsk Airport?
It’s hoped that the facilities will be much improved with the completion of the new terminal. The current one has adequate facilities but they are a little dated and the current terminal is a little tired looking in places. After the new terminal opens, the old one will service domestic flights whilst the new one will take international arrivals and departures. At the moment the terminal offers a duty free shop as well as several other retail outlets selling Ukrainian souvenirs, clothes and travel related goods. There is a restaurant serving traditional Ukrainian fare as well as a snack bar. You’ll also find a bank and several ATMs for cash withdrawal. Free Wi-Fi is also available, an unusual feature of Eastern European airports. The new terminal will improve upon much of this, having a rapid transit system to speed travellers through airport procedures as well as jet bridges to save passengers having to walk across the apron to their flight. There’ll be greater range of retail outlets and additional facilities to make your stay in the airport more comfortable.
