Fort Walton Beach Airport Mini Guide
Where is Fort Walton?
Fort Walton is found two miles from a small community called Navarre in Northern Florida
. Unlike the cities and resorts of the southern part of the state, Navarre is a peaceful, almost sleepy backwater. The beaches here are rugged and occasionally windswept and the tourists that come to visit the area favour the isolation and natural attractions over the brasher Fort Lauderdale
, Clearwater and Miami
. Sailing is a popular activity in the area with several of the coastal towns having sailing clubs and small marinas. For a little more life, the city of Pensacola is only 25 miles away from Fort Walton. Accommodation in and around Fort Walton is more traditional with boarding houses and small hotels or summer beach houses to rent rather than grand hotels.
How do I get to Fort Walton and Navarre?
Unless you have your own plane or are arriving on a private charter the answer is not at the airport. Fort Walton only accepts general aviation flights from cargo carriers, private charters or private planes. That said it has a range of facilities for its users including a café, small shop and Wi-Fi, all designed to help the business traveller smooth their journey. Private charters go there for specialised trips, either for the natural beauty of the area or for smaller conventions. If flying in by private plane or private charter, you’ll need to advise the airport of your arrival time.
Next, it’s useful to book any car hire requirements in advance so the rental company can organise the correct cars for you. Food can be laid on for your arrival or departure and rooms are available for meetings if pre-booked. Flight plans will need to be filed for your return flight but the airport can help with that, liaising with the Meteorological Office.
