El Paso Airport Mini Guide

Who Goes to El Paso?
Many travel to El Paso to find out more about the early days of Texas, New Mexico and Mexico, for it was there that territorial battles were fought and the Mexican revolution impacted on the Americans. It’s also a great place to cross the border and see the different way of life in the adjacent Mexican city of Juarez. El Paso is the closest US city to the border and in fact the area around the city is known as Borderland. As you might expect, there’s a heavy Hispanic influence on life in the city. Near El Paso is Fort Bliss, the largest US Forces base in the world.

How do I get to El Paso?
El Paso International Airport is found four miles from the city centre and although it’s called an international airport, with recent airline restructuring, there are currently no international flights. Travellers from Europe would need to fly into Chicago, Los Angeles or Dallas before continuing their journey.

What is the Airport Like?
It’s quite a busy airport, handling over three million passengers annually. There’s been a lot of remodelling of the airport taking place in recent years and it now provides first class facilities for passengers.

El Paso Airport

What can I expect when I land at El Paso?
You can expect a modern airport that will disembark you via air bridges onto either the west or east concourse of the airport. A walk of up to 200m will see you reach the ‘meet and greet’ area where staff welcome you to El Paso before directing you through security. You’ll then have to go down to the lower level  to the baggage reclaim area where you’ll also find the car rental companies’ offices should you wish to hire a car or collect a pre-booked vehicle. Once inside the main hall, you can find out anything you need to know about the airport facilities at the information desk and change currency at the Travelex branch there. If you’re taking public transport into the city, Sun Metro buses operate a route from the airport to downtown El Paso.

What can I Expect When I Leave El Paso?
You’ll need to drop off your luggage and collect your tickets from the check-in desks and then you’ll have time to explore the shopping and dining areas of the airport. There is a good range of shops at El Paso. They’re not the usual ones you’d expect and there are no big names. Instead you have a marketplace atmosphere with small shops selling gifts, books, travel accessories plus a riding products store and a Harley Davidson outlet. Eating at the airport is good too, with the expected Mexican restaurant, a Burger King and the more refined El Paso Vineyard restaurant where you can enjoy a great meal in a setting a little like a wine cellar. If you want to access the internet, there are two Wi-Fi providers, both of whom charge for the airtime.

Business travellers find car hire El Paso Airport to be convenient for travelling to the central business district of El Paso in no time at all. This is a modestly sized international airport which has just under 1.5 million passengers per year.

However you will need a rental vehicle there as Texas is a huge state and there are only a couple of destinations served by the local Metro bus service. El Paso Airport is situated in the most westerly corner of Texas so you will definitely need to drive or fly to connect with the other main Texas cities.
