Detroit Airport Mini Guide
What Should Make me Want to Visit Detroit?
Detroit has an almost unbeatable heritage being the US’s Motor City, home of all the major car manufacturers and also it’s the original Motown for a whole era and class of music. The city today is a very popular short break destination with a wealth of things to see and do. Try staying in the west’s tallest hotel in the Renaissance Centre that’s also the world headquarters of General Motors. The city also has many ethnic neighbourhoods which are great for enjoying foreign culture in the US; Corktown is the Irish neighbourhood whilst Greektown and Mexicantown speak for themselves!
What’s the Best way of Getting to Detroit?
Many choose to land elsewhere and take a motor car back to the cradle of American motors whilst less sentimental types fly straight into Detroit Metro Airport, twenty minutes from the airport, and catch a bus or take a hire car downtown. Flights arrive at Detroit from all over the world including Japan
where most of the flights serve the automobile industry traveller. Flights are available from major European destinations too including London
What is the Airport Like?
It’s another huge airport serving over 32m passengers last year. It’s the most recently updated airport in the States and so you can expect excellent facilities in bright, clean surroundings.
What Can I Expect When I Land at Detroit?
There are two terminals, both handling domestic and international flights. The design of each is similar with a long concourse with air docks for every plane from which passengers enter the airport. There’s a shuttle between the terminals if you need to make a connection and travelators for those who find the distances from the plane to the terminal a struggle. Once you’ve made it through security and baggage, you’ll enter the arrivals hall which is often quite busy.
Recent upgrades have meant that movements around the terminal are better planned and so your journey to your onward means of transport should be easy. The car hire companies have a separate facility on the airport site and a shuttle bus, clearly indicated by overhead signs, will take you to the garage. If you need cash at the airport there are several banks and ATMs at your disposal.
And What are the Facilities Like for my Departure?
You can access all aspects of the airport’s ‘Marketplace once you’ve checked in and have your boarding pass. Over a hundred concessions await you on several levels in both terminals, both before and after security. The airport has won several awards for the shopping at its McNamara terminal, an achievement it looks set to continue. Dining is a great experience at the airport and many people arrive early to sample award winning cuisine from some of the airport’s top restaurants whilst others down a quick snack before boarding. After security, you’ll find further refreshments and across the airport there’s free wireless internet connection for those who have travelled with laptops or netbooks.
