Dallas Airport Mini Guide

Is Dallas the City Anything Like Dallas the TV Series?
In some ways yes, it’s big, brash and loves shouting about how great it is. The city was founded in the mid-1800s, initially on the fortune of cotton production using African slaves and then later on with the exploitation of the oil resources in the state. Today it is the third wealthiest city in the US and has added communications and banking to its revenue streams. It’s home to the world famous Dallas State Fair which grinds the whole state to a halt for the celebrations every autumn. Outside the city, the countryside is great for exploring and has many natural wonders.

How do I Get Into Dallas?
Dallas is served by Dallas-Fort Worth Airport found halfway between the two cities. Dallas is around twenty miles from the airport and has a variety of means of access to it. Whilst most of the flights are internal, British Airways do a route from London Heathrow on a daily basis. An alternative route would be to fly to New York and catch a connecting American Airlines flight.

What is the Airport Like?
The airport is one of the top ten busiest airports in the world, serving 56m passengers last year. It has five terminals already, with capacity for many more should traffic require it. It’s currently undergoing a near $2bn dollar refit of the terminals, due to be completed in 2017 that will make it the most modern of the world’s large airports.

What Can I Expect When I Land?
If you’re flying in from abroad you’ll dock at terminal D which is the only terminal built as a U shape rather than the semi-circular footprint of the other four terminals. All flights there disembark through an air bridge so entry to the terminal is easy.  For those getting a connecting flight, the fast ‘Skytrain’ rail shuttle will get you between the terminals quickly.  Inside each terminal, there is a significant distance to walk, depending on your arrival gate, so if you struggle with distances it’s best to enquire of your airline before you fly.

In all of the terminals there are information desks which come in very handy given the size of the airport. There are all the amenities you might need including banking and currency exchange, places of worship, shops and first aid. For those of you using public transport to get into Dallas, there is a fast bus shuttle but which is subject to the vagaries of the highway system and has been known to take up to three hours into the city. If you’re hiring a car from the airport, the rental centre is ten minutes away by shuttle bus. Signs at the airport direct you to the pick-up point.

What are the Facilities Like When I Leave?
As you might expect, the facilities are exceptional with dozens of different shops at which you can spend your last holiday dollars and great restaurants for you to have a final reminder of how steak is meant to be cooked or the right way to make a chilli con carne. Wi-Fi is available as a matter of course at the airport and there are numerous other facilities including child care, barbers, dry cleaning etc.
