Atlanta Mini Guide
What can you Tell me About Atlanta?
Atlanta is a fabulous city with a colourful past, a bright and breezy present and a potentially glowing future. In its time, it’s been destroyed in war, flooded, been burnt to the ground and suffered extreme hardship through drought. It was originally founded as a small town at the end of a railway line but has since grown to be the sixth largest city in the States.
It began from humble origins in the 1840s and was an important city in the Civil War. In later years it was the centre of the American Civil Rights Society and was the stamping ground of Martin Luther King whose support grew out of the black campuses of Atlanta’s universities.
Today it is a vibrant metropolis, home to several of the world’s biggest companies and is embarking on a period of growth born out of the development of an enlarged metropolitan area.
How do I get to Atlanta?
Atlanta is also home to the world’s biggest airport by passenger numbers and the 92m people that use it each year can’t be wrong. Hartsfield – Jackson International Airport is only just outside the city and has many ways to get you into the city; the best of which being a hire car so you can really get to know Georgia.
What Should be top of my List in Atlanta?
First you should head for Centennial Park where three of Atlanta’s top attractions are found. Top of everyone’s list is ‘World of Coca Cola’ where you’ll be treated to plenty of free samples. Cross over to the Georgia Aquarium, the world’s biggest; you can even swim with a whale shark there if you’re brave enough! CNN are also represented there and you can have a tour of the studios to see how the world’s biggest news station is run.
Elsewhere in Atlanta, the birthplace of Martin Luther King is a fascinating and poignant place to visit. There’s a museum detailing his life as well as the memorial to him in what is a National Historic Site.
Atlanta is one of the top destinations for gastronomes in the US with delicious fusion food blending the best of the Deep South with mainstream America, matched with impeccable service and delicious wines. Known for its fruit, you should also try out the fresh peaches grown all around the city.
For whatever reason you are visiting Atlanta, the city will continue to enthral and entertain, never disappointing the traveller with an open mind.
- The Maynard Jackson Terminal opened a month ago and is already easing congestion at this huge and growing airport. International travellers are now likely to land at the new terminal.
