  • It’s an island found off the south coast of Tunisia.

  • La Ghriba synagogue is one of the oldest in the Mediterranean and the place of worship for the island’s Cohanim Jews.

Djerba Mini Guide

Where is Djerba?
It’s a small island by Mediterranean standards but still the largest off the North African coast. It’s located near the southern coast of Tunisia which is easily accessed by ferry from the main town and port of Houmt Souk. In the summer the island is dry and arid but when the winter rains water the land, the spring growth turns the island into a jewel.

How can I get to Djerba?
Djerba-Zarzis Airport takes many scheduled flights from European airports, mostly from airports in the south of France and Spain whilst the large amount of tourism means that charter flights are regular and inexpensive in the peak season. The island is small enough to get to all of the resorts quickly and cheaply from the airport. An alternative is to fly into Tunis Airport and catch the ferry to Houmt Souk.

What is There to See and Do in Djerba?
The main attraction is the sunny weather, warm, clean sea and the beautiful, uncrowded beaches which have made the island a popular tourist destination. Once there, you’ll find a lot more to do if you want some respite from sun, sand and sea. You can visit the biggest conservation centre for the Mediterranean crocodile at Djerba Explore which also educates visitors with a replica of a traditional village where people live and work as they would have done hundreds of years ago.

What can I buy as Souvenirs?
If you visit Guellala, you’ll find a village that has made traditional pottery for over two thousand years. Today they still make the unique pieces but instead of for practical use, it’s for tourists to buy as souvenirs. Another great and very lightweight gift is the loofahs that are grown and dried on the island so when you’re home and need a back scrub, reach for your Djerban loofah!

What Food is Special to Djerba?
For fast food try the brik a l’oeuf, a delicious egg dish, lalabi, a chickpea and lemon soup, or a mixed grilled vegetable salad called salade mechouia.

Mythology has Djerba as the island of the lotus eaters where Odysseus was forced to stay during his voyage. The magical land of the lotus eaters can easily be envisaged in spring on the island when the countryside is green and lush and flamingos wade dreamily in the waters off Ras Rmel.

The island is famous as the setting for part of the Star Wars series of films and many companies offer tours to see the setting. Elsewhere, most people come to Djerba for the fabulous beaches, relaxed way of life and the sunsets, considered to be the most spectacular at this end of the Mediterranean.
