Phuket Airport Mini Guide
Why do People Travel to Phuket Airport?
The airport serves one of the busiest tourist destinations in Asia with nearly nine million people using the airport each year. They come for the beautiful beaches, the stunning scenery and the friendly welcome of the Thai people. They also come for the chance to buy hand tailored clothes at discount prices and to see the commercial orchids that are grown in abundance on the island.
How Easy is it to get to Phuket Airport?
There are many flights to Phuket Airport from across Europe and Asia as well as Australia
. There’s only one direct flight from the UK
and that’s with Thomson from Gatwick Airport
. Most flights from the UK stop off in Bangkok
to allow a few days in the capital. Once at the airport you’ll find car hire a good idea as there is a lot to see on the island and distances are reasonable to travel.
What is the Airport Like?
The airport was quite crowded but after undergoing an expansion in 2016 it eased congestion. There are currently three terminals, Two international and one domestic. Most travellers will end up at the domestic terminal if they’ve flown in from Bangkok.
Facilities are reasonable but not extensive for such a big airport. The only restaurant and shop are run by AOT. The restaurant serves basic fare and it’s quite expensive so it might be better to bring something with you whilst the shop is a duty free combined with travel goods and reading material. There are five currency exchange bureaus dotted around the airport so getting bahts whilst there shouldn’t be a problem.
