Devonport Mini Guide
Where is Devonport?
Devonport is a country town and port in the north west of Tasmania, Australia
. It lies on the estuary of the River Mersey in the Cradle Coast region. It is known as ‘Australia’s market garden’ as 40% of all Tasmania’s vegetable crop is grown there.
From abroad, you will probably end up in Melbourne
, as it is the nearest city on the mainland. Spirit of Tasmania ferries leave from Melbourne and the journey takes 11 hours. You can fly from Melbourne too, into the nearby Devonport Airport or Hobart Airport
, which is a 3 ½ hour drive away. Tassielink or Redline buses will take you there from other parts of Tasmania.
Take a Tour…
Visit the Devonport Maritime Museum and discover the town’s rich sea-faring past and then take a cruise on the estuary with Mersey Sea Cruises. Take a walk to Mersey Bluff Beach and see the lighthouse or just relax and catch a few rays of sun. There you will also find the Tiagarra Aboriginal Culture Centre, where you can find out about aboriginal life and see ancient rock engravings. If art is more your thing, you can see 20th century artworks from Tasmanian artists at Devonport Regional Gallery.
Out and About
Just outside of town, you can go to the Tasmanian Arboretum, a botanical tree park with trees and shrubs from around the world. Take a walking trail and look out for the waterbirds and platypus. Why not visit the Don Valley Railway and take the 30 minute ride on a vintage steam train all accessible using car hire in Devonport.
Eating and Drinking
Eat out bistro style at Inn-dulgence Café and Wine Bar or if you like Italian food, head for Bella’s. For fast food, treat yourself at All Things Nice Bakery and Café or have fish and chips at Sharkey’s. Down a Guinness at Molly Malone’s Irish Pub or have a beer at Backpackers Barn.
What’s the Shopping Like?
You can get your shopping fix at Devonport Mall and the East Devonport Village, next to the dock. For homewares head to Don Road and to buy handicrafts or something unusual, go to 4ways Shopping Centre.
Staying a Few Days?
You can stay at Glasgow Lodge, a self contained motel in the city and in the centre of town. All the units have cooking facilities and internet access. The motel offers a shuttle bus service to and from Devonport Airport. If you want to get out of the town, you can spend a few relaxing days at the Silver Ridge Retreat. It has lodge style accommodation with gardens and a swimming pool.
