Altenrhein Airport Mini Guide
Why do People Travel to Altenrhein?
Altenrhein is an unassuming village, part of the Thal commune but the gateway to so much of what there is to enjoy in this part of Switzerland. If you travel in summer, you can tour the castles of the Rhine by boat or in your Altenrhein hire car along the banks of the mighty river. For many though, it’s the perfect location for getting to business meetings without being in the centre of a big city.
In winter, it’s also perfect for heading out to the ski slopes around St Gallen whilst Germany and Austria are within easy reach for a change of culture.
How Easy is it to Get There?
It’s not particularly easy to get there from the UK as there are no direct flights. Vienna is the closest connecting airport for travellers from outside the country but some may prefer to fly to Friedrichshafen Airport on the opposite bank of Lake Constance and drive into Altenrhein or fly to Zurich Airport
. Accommodation is limited in Altenrhein so, like your car hire, you’ll need to book early.
What Should be on my Must See List?
When the business deals are signed and you want to relax a little, the must see places in the area include the many castles on the hills that overlook the Rhine. It’s a little like a Germanic ‘Chateaux of the Loire Valley’ and you can spend many days wandering their Teutonic halls.
Lake Constance is a great destination for a day out or more. On one side it’s Switzerland, the other, it’s Germany but from either side it’s peaceful and stunningly beautiful.
