Tudela Mini Guide

Many civilisations have settled in Tudela over the years. The town, which was built on the banks of the River Ebro in the Navarre province, has been home to Christians, Muslims and Jews and its different types of architecture are a testament to its history. There is a Cistercian Cathedral which has Romanesque, Gothic and and Renaissance features while the church of San Jorge has been built in the Baroque style.

The 17th century square Mercadal is also unforgettable and it contains the Castel Ruiz municipal arts centre and Plaza Vieja. Lots of fine sites, which include cloisters, castles and many chapels, make sightseeing in Tudela a very rewarding experience. Tudela is the capital of the agricultural area of Ribera but is a small town with a population of around 40,000 people. It is not known as a tourist destination, but there is plenty to see and do there and it represents a very authentic experience of provincial life in Spain.

Tudela City

The town, which is located in the north of the country, was originally founded by Muslims in the 800s because of its strategic importance on the River Ebro. June is a great time to visit Tudela if you are looking for excitement as that is when the running of the bulls occurs, as well as the accompanying bullfights, fiestas and street music. The weather during the summer is hot and will please any sun seekers, though it can get cold in the winter. Celebrations are very popular in Tudela and the town has a whole website - www.fiestasdetudela.com - dedicated to the numerous planned festivities.

Tudela has plenty of accommodation opportunities including five star or boutique hotels and guest houses. Most of these can be booked in advance over the internet. Tudela is very accessible by car via two major freeways, the autopistas 15 and 68. You can also get there by train and two fast running tracks serve the town.

Zaragoza is the nearest international airport. If you have hired a car there are many other parts of the Navarre province which can be visited from Tudela and are well worth seeing. The small town of Estella was the residence of kings and the stopping off point for many pilgrims during the Middle Ages. There you can take time to see art collections from ancient times or take a tour around the castles of the Kings of Navarre.
