Banks in Spain

Spain has many large banking institutions and one of the largest is the Grupo Santander. This comprises many international banks including Alliance and Leicester International and the Sovereign Bank. The Banco Santander started in Cantabria and is one of the biggest banks in the world. They run an online bank known as Openbank.

Bankinter was founded jointly by the Banco Santander and the Bank of America. It is headquartered in Madrid.

Banesto is the fifth largest banking group in Spain and it is mostly owned by the Grupo Santander.


Another main national bank is the Bank of Spain. The bank was established at the end of the 18th century in Madrid by Carlos III. It is now a member of the European System of Central Banks. Located in Palma de Mallorca, the Banca March is the main bank for the Balearic Islands.

Bilbao Biscay Savings Bank, or Bilbao Bizkaia Kutxa in the Basque language, is a relatively recent bank formed in 1990. The Gipuzkoa eta Donostiako Aurrezki Kutxa is also known as Kutxa. This Basque bank has savings accounts.

Caixa Catalunya is based in Barcelona and is Catalonia's second largest bank and the fifth biggest in Spain.

The oldest Spanish bank is the Banco Etcheverría which was founded in A Coruna in 1717. The second oldest bank in Spain is the Banco Pastor. It was founded in La Coruna in 1776.

The Caja de Ahorros y Monte de Piedad de Madrid is the oldest savings bank in Spain.

La Caixa is the main savings bank for the Catalonia region. It has more than 10 and a half million customers and they have access to eight hundred ATMs and five and a half thousand branches.

The Banco Caixa Geral is a subsidiary of the largest bank in Portugal and it is located in Vigo. The Espírito Santo Financial Group is also based in Portugal but has branches in Spain.

The Caja de Ahorros de Ronda, Cádiz, Almería, Málaga y Antequera or Unicaja, is based in Malaga.

The Banco Atlantico is part of the Banco Sabadell group since 2003. Banco Sabadell is the fourth largest banking group in Spain and comprises many different institutions.

The Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA) was formed in 1999. It is a multi-national Spanish banking group. BBVA is one of the main institutions in Spain.

Part of the Grupo Banco Popular, the Banco Popular Espanol is a national bank which is the third largest in Spain.

The Spanish Confederation of Savings Banks or Confederación Española de Cajas de Ahorros Benéficas is known as CECA. The Caja de Ahorros del Mediterráneo or CAM is a savings bank based in Alicante.

Caja Laboral Popular Sociedad Cooperativa de Credito is located in the Basque country and has been around 1959. Banco de Valencia is the sixth largest bank of Spain. They recently bought the Banco Castellon.

The Caja Navarra is headquartered in Pamplona and this medium sized savings bank which serves the Navarra region.
