Granollers Mini Guide
Granollers lies in the Catalonia region of north east Spain and is its biggest city after Barcelona
. It is the capital of the camaraca (Spanish for shire or county) of Vallès Oriental and its most densely populated city. Vallès Oriental has a wide range of different aspects including mountains, large valleys with rolling hills, cultivated fields, streams, towns and cities. More than 100,000 people live in Granollers, a spread out conurbation within Vallès Oriental and business, industry and agriculture are all practised in the different parts of the city and region.
One of the symbolic buildings in the city which sums up its architectural feel is La Porxada, which was used to store grain and was built in the Renaissance. The ancient hospital of San Domenec should also be seen as it has now been converted into a theatre called Francesc Tarafa and is a fine example of how Gothic architecture should be restored. Taking a walk along the banks of the River Congost is a good way to see some of the sights that Granollers has to offer. In terms of nightlife, there is pretty much everything you could want to do in Granollers. It has bars, clubs, ten pin bowling alleys, cinemas and casinos. A good time to go shopping there is on Thursdays for the city market when a number of different artisans set up stalls offering local produce and wares.
On the last Thursday in August you can see the Festa Major, Great Celebration, whose folklore is based on an old bet done in the city in the 19th century. The Fair of the Ascent also takes place in Granollers to recognise the success of its industries such as agriculture and trade.
Many of the hotels in Granollers reflect the modern feel of the city with a number of nicely designed yet reasonably priced boutique hotels on offer. In terms of location, you can't beat the Duquesa de Cardona hotel in the Gothic quarter which has a pool and terrace with views out across the port. It is also possible to rent three or five bedroom vacation apartments which are fully furnished and have pools. There are around 700 rooms in total available in Granollers which can accommodate over 1,000 people.
Granollers is accessible by driving 25 kilometres from Barcelona International Airport
. If you rent a car it is not far to drive to Barcelona along the coastline of beautiful beaches.
