Almunecar Mini Guide
Welcome to the Costa Tropical
Situated in southern Spain, between
Granada and
Malaga is Almunecar: a sub-tropical province of Andalucia. Imagine breathtaking scenery boasting a mixture of crystal blue Mediterranean and lush green sub-tropical vegetation, all highlighted by a golden sun. For several decades the town and surrounding area has been a popular tourist destination. Attractions include amazing scenery, art and gastronomy, all accompanied by fabulous hospitality.
First established as a Phoenician colony called "Sexi" in 800BC, its colourful history includes Roman and Arabian occupation. Under an alternative name, Almunecar features in Laurie Lee's account of the Spanish Civil War.
How do I get There?
If you are looking to fly in, Amunecar is equidistant between
Granada and Malaga airports with good road links across. Rhino offers cost-effective car hire to make the initial drive in comfort and giving you freedom to travel around once you reach your destination.
Something for Everyone
Whether you love nature, want to get active, or prefer relaxing on the beach there's something in Almunecar to keep everyone happy. Diving on the rich sea beds is a must or, if you prefer to stay dry, the Aquatic Park and Aquarium are good alternatives. There are ample sights for budding historians, including a Roman temple and an ancient aqueduct. Sports are a big feature on offer, whether in the Mediterranean waters or on shore at the local football stadium. There are three UNESCO sites in Almunecar; the Alhambra, the Generalife and the whole of the Albaicin district. Get your cameras ready for there's plenty to snap away at.
Party on Down
As you might expect from a tourist area the nightlife is vibrant and especially during summer. There are numerous bars, clubs and restaurants to frequent until the small hours, offering a wide variety of music to suit different tastes: from jazz to folk to modern pop and disco. Fiestas are inevitably popular, most notably at Easter and during summer, providing a good opportunity to sample local culture and speciality dishes. These feature the best harvests of the region, which include vibrant tropical fruits and a wide variety of local fresh fish.
- Almunecar isn't far from the Sierra Nevada Mountains so a visit early in the year could combine lazy days on the beach with a trip up to the Spanish ski resorts, less than an hour away. Visit in March 2013 and you'll be able to watch the final of the World Championship Snowboarding Competition from the 18th to the 26th.
- A rather unusual but fascinating exhibition is being held in Granada, less than 20 minutes from Almunecar. Entitled 'Brain:The Inside Story', the exhibit tells through lots of different ways how the brain works and what it does. Located in the Museo Parque de las Ciencias, it's free to enter and appeals greatly to children.
