  • Plettenberg Bay is also known as Plett but was originally named as Bahia Formosa
  • Although founded by the Portuguese after a boat was shipwrecked there in 1630, leaving the crew marooned for nine months, it was the Dutch that named it after the Dutch governor of the Cape, Joachim van Plettenberg.
  • The area has a rich ecosystem being where a cape breaks the flow of the Southern Ocean, allowing sea creatures to shelter nearby

Tell me More About Plettenberg Bay
People have been living in the area for over 100,000 years but it wasn’t until a shipwreck in 1630 that the first Europeans lived in what is now Plettenberg Bay. In a Robinson Crusoe style tale, the hundred men marooned there eventually made makeshift boats and sailed out to a passing ship. After they were rescued it was many years before the Dutch East India Company set up a staging post there which developed into the town. Today it is prime tourist material with great beaches and a place on the South African Garden Route.

How do I get to Plettenberg Bay?
Plettenberg Bay has its own small airport which closed for several years when the runway was found to be too short to accommodate modern aircraft. It has since been extended and the airport reopened four years ago taking domestic flights from South Africa’s main international airports. There are no direct international flights there and so travellers from outside South Africa are recommended to fly into Johannesburg Airport before making a connection to Plettenberg Bay.

What Should I do in Plettenberg Bay?
The top activity for tourists is to wildlife spot. Boat trips take you out into the bay to watch seal pups, whales mating or feeding and the sharks that come to feed off the young seals. There’s also a colony of penguins which are fun to watch. On land the wildlife theme continues where you have the Birds of Eden free flying bird park and a monkey sanctuary where, again, the monkeys roam free.
