It’s a relatively new town, built not long after the Great War for use as a whaling station. The town grew rapidly with the demand for whale oil until international laws prohibited whaling in the sixties. Today it focuses on its natural wonders for its income including the world renowned fossil deposits nearby and the national park that encompasses the lagoon and its shores, home to hundreds of species of bird.
How Easy is it to get to Langebaan?
The town is around an hour and a half from Cape Town’s international airport which is served by two flights from London’s Heathrow Airport
, one with BA, the other with Virgin. There are flights from other European airports too including Paris, Amsterdam
. You can hire a car at Cape Town Airport
for the drive along the coast or, if you prefer to hire a car in Langebaan when you arrive, you can take a coach or the train which passes close to the town.
What can I see or do in Langebaan?
There are two prime attractions; the West Coast National Park and the West Coast Fossil Park. The national park encompasses the Langebaan lagoon and is home to hundreds of species of birds attracting equal numbers of birdwatchers every month to the town.
The fossil park is renowned throughout the world for its examples of fossilised dinosaur bones and makes for a fascinating visit for old and young alike. The exhibits, most of which are in situ, are clearly identifiable and well explained.
