Constanta Mini Guide
What can you Tell me About Constanta?
It’s a very old city whose heritage goes back to the ancient Greek port of Tomis. It has thrived ever since, even through times of hardship, and today remains an important port city – the third largest in Europe. Hand in hand with its commercial importance is its popularity as a holiday resort, mainly with Romanians but increasingly with other Eastern Europeans and Germans for there are now several seasonal flights from German cities to the resort.
How can I get to Constanta Airport?
The airport takes only seasonal flights so over the winter it’s only open to general aviation. In summer it takes flights from central Europe including two German and two Italian flights. Travellers from the UK
may miss out unless they connect through Frankfurt
or alternatively, and often cheaper, fly with Ryanair to Pisa
and then onto Constanta with the same airline.
What is There to see or do in Constanta?
As you’d imagine of an old city, much of what there is to do is based on history, architecture and archaeology. There are some recent ruins in the fascinating old casino on the sea front. Closed decades ago, this beautiful art nouveau masterpiece can be visited with the protection of hard hats and a guide and makes for an atmospheric way to spend a few hours. Elsewhere, visit the Roman mosaics or spend the day on the two main beaches called Mamaia and Modern.
