Carvoeiro Mini Guide
Once a small fishing village, Carvoeiro is now dotted with plush flats and apartments, high class restaurants, bars and shops. But it has lost none of its charm, making it a favourite destination for tourists who can soak up the sunshine and play sports such as golf and tennis to keep them entertained.
Today there is a 36-hole Golf & Holiday Complex which can be found to the west of the village together with a well run Tennis Centre, while on the eastern outskirts of Carvoeiro a nine hole golf course can also be found. Carvoeiro is the centre of golf on the Algarve and many courses have been designed by the game's greats including Arnold Palmer. There are even a couple of lawn bowling clubs in the village.
If you are not feeling so active, but want to go exploring there are many beautiful beaches hidden away in pleasant coves surrounded by cliffs. Under these, are caves which can be accessed when the tide is out. Beaches worth visiting are the Praia de Centianes, Praia de Carvalho, Praia de Benagil, Praia de Marinha and Praia da Albandeira.
And if you have a hire car you can also get to the unspoilt village of Ferragudo to the west and the small village of Porches which is inland. Another place which should be seen inland is the historic city of Silves which has an impressive castle - a reminder of times gone past. Carvoeiro is served by the airports in
Portimao to the west, or the more popular Faro around 30 miles to the east. Car hire from
Faro Airport is both inexpensive and convenient and popular for travellers to Carvoeiro.
- For something completely different, take a boat trip from Peniche harbour out to the Berlengas Islands which have an atmospheric 16th century fortress and tiny white sandy beaches where you'll be away from almost everyone.
You might have thought it was the preserve of the French but on July 13th the town hosts a gastronomic festival called the Festival do Caracol where you can get to try snails cooked in many different ways.
