Oslo Airport Mini Guide

An Airport Since 1940s
Oslo Airport, otherwise known as Gardermoen, is located almost 50km outside Oslo, the capital of Norway.  It was originally a Norwegian army base in the 1700s and became a military airport in the 1940s.  Later it became the second airport for the city until 1998 when it took over as being the main international hub for flights to and from Norway. It is now used by many of the world's major airlines for international flights and also by some smaller Norwegian airlines for domestic flights within the country.

Facilities of a World Class Airport
Oslo Airport offers excellent facilities for travellers. Many people who travel need some kind of assistance, be it a wheelchair for those with limited mobility or a chaperone for unaccompanied children, there is all possible assistance there for anyone who needs it, from landing at the airport to reaching the transport for your onward journey and vice versa.

If you need help with your bags there are porters available and should you have the misfortune to lose any of your luggage at Oslo Airport, then contact the left luggage and storage office, if it has been found it will be there – they will even forward it to you if it's found after you've left the airport.

Keeping in Touch or Travelling on Business
All of the food and beverage outlets within the airport have free Wi-Fi connection for up to one hour after logging on. Should you require a longer connection, you may use the charged services.  There are also internet facilities at the information desk in the arrivals hall and in the domestic and international departure areas. If you are lucky enough to be travelling on a first or business class ticket, there are various lounges available for your use offering internet facilities, newspapers, drinks and snacks.

How to Spend Your Time at the Airport
There are several shops in all areas of the airport, from the duty free and fashion outlets in the international departure area to kiosks and book stands in the arrivals hall.  There are also plenty of restaurants and bars available – fast food in arrivals when you want to be on your way quickly to a Norwegian Aquavit bar and the Kon Tiki Kitchen offering their special “Kon Tiki Casserole”, personally approved by Thor Heyerdahl in the international departures.

The Surrounding Area
All the major international car rental companies are represented at Oslo Airport, you will find their desks on the west side of the arrivals hall, towards the railway station.  Norway is best known for it's fjords and winter sports, but it is a year round destination offering a diverse range of activities with something for everyone. Oslo is in eastern Norway and the landscape varies between the highest mountains in northern Europe in the Jotunheimen National Park to the deep forest along the Swedish border which is inhabited by wolves. The airport itself is on the main road between Oslo and Lillehammer which is famous for holding the 1994 Winter Olympic Games.
