There are three flights a day to/from Wellington
operated by Eagle Airways for Air New Zealand and there are occasional flights to Christchurch and Oamuru.

This port and seaside town has a stunning backdrop of snow-clad mountains – its name appropriately translates from the Maori ‘place of shelter’. Caroline Bay is the place to go and swim or relax on the beach or if you want to surf, head for Patiti Point. To find out more about the town’s heritage, go to South Canterbury Museum and see fossils and Maori rock art. The Aigantighe Art Gallery has works from the 16th century to the present and a sculpture garden or if you enjoy nature see the local ferns and roses at Timaru Botanic Gardens.

Drive out to the rural village of Geraldine, it has a pretty main street with historic buildings. The village has a thriving arts community too.
