Timaru is famous for two things and with a hire car you’ll get to see them both as well as other attractions in the area. The first is the strangest named mountain in the world, the extinct volcano on which the city is built, Mount Horrible, which actually isn’t horrible!

The volcano gives the typical undulating nature of the city’s streets and provides the very different ‘bluestone’ of which many of the city’s buildings are made. The second famous thing about Timaru is its amazing roses. Seek them out at the Trevor Griffiths Garden and the Timaru Botanical Gardens.
