Merida Airport Car Hire - Did You Know?

  • Merida Airport is named after the 19th century politician; Manuel Crescencio Rejon and was formerly known as Merida-Rejon Airport
  • It serves nearly 1.25m passengers each year.
  • The airport operates around the clock and can take aeroplanes up to the size of a 747
  • The only international flight bizarrely, is a seasonal flight to Milan
  • It’s located on the edge of the city of Merida, only three miles from the city centre.

A Mini Guide to Merida

Who Travels to Merida?
Most of the flights are internal so a lot of the air traffic is Mexicans coming to work, do business or visit families in the city. More people though are coming to discover the rich culture of the city which dates back to Mayan times or to see the beautiful colonial buildings left behind by the Spanish. Merida is not far from the coast so if the temperature does become unbearable, the cooling sea is only a short hire car drive away.

How Easy is it to get to Merida?
It’s not really that easy for a big city. All flights are internal with most of them being smaller destinations for which Merida is a hub. There are regular flights from Cancun, Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara and these can act as hubs to get to Merida. Travellers from Europe can also use Milan Malpensa as a hub, for direct flights leave from there in summer.

Merida Airport

What is the Airport Like?
The airport is the second largest in the group of airports run by ASUR and was completely remodelled a decade ago. For a regional airport is has plenty of facilities including several duty free shops selling tobacco products, alcohol and electrical goods. A good range of boutiques selling clothes, gifts, leather goods, tequila and more complement the range. If you feel peckish at the airport there’s a comprehensive food court with a range of food from fast to a la carte Mexican dishes, cafes and bars. Medical facilities are also found at the airport and if you need money there’s a branch of Banco Azteca offering exchange facilities.
