Kaunas Mini Guide
The city of Kaunas is located in Lithuania and, with a population of around 350,000, it is the second largest in the country.
Legend surrounds the city's name and one being that it is named after the son of a Roman who was fearful of the empire and fled to Lithuania to escape the emperor.
Access to the city is good due to its central location. The city has a large international airport as well as excellent roads and motorways.
The city has many parks and nature reserves in its district and there are many historical places of interest for visitors to visit. These include Kaunas Castle, Vytautas' Church, Kaunas Cathedral Basilica, Pazaislis Abbey, Kaunas Fortress and St George's Church.
For those who are not interested in the architectural sites the city also has a state zoo and Botanical Gardens. Kaunas has a well-developed cultural side with many museums in the city such as the Aviation Museum, the Historic Presidential Palace, Kaunas Picture Gallery and the Lithuania Sports Museum.
There is also no shortage of theatres with a total of five in the city.
For those who enjoy a lively nightlife scene the city does not disappoint. Although it could never be classified as a wild night out it does have a healthy share of bars and clubs and their numbers are increasing.
The city has many live music venues and also a casino for those that fancy a flutter during their visit.
- An interesting event taking place in Kaunas this year is the Napoleon Bonaparte and the Time Machine re-enactment of the invasion of Russia by the French Emperor. A large part of the city winds the clock back from the 22nd to the 24th June when cannon, gunfire, pomp and ceremony take over.
