Beirut Airport Mini Guide

Isn’t Beirut Dangerous?
It used to be and up until recent years, the Foreign Office advice was not to visit Lebanon. Things there have calmed down considerably but localised flashpoints still occur. Beirut is considered safe and offers a great, edgy short break destination. Called the ‘Paris of the Middle East’, the city has beautiful buildings and great cuisine, considered one of the best of the Middle East.

Getting to Beirut
If travelling from overseas, Beirut is served by the only commercial airport in Lebanon, Beirut Rafic Hariri International Airport which processed nearly 6m passengers last year. As well as the airport, Beirut Sea Port is also a popular arrival point for tourists with ferries arriving from nearby Cyprus, Greece and Turkey.
BA and Middle East Airlines both fly to Beirut from London Heathrow. From the airport it’s possible to hire a taxi or take the bus but be warned that the buses are often overcrowded and dirty and the taxi drivers are tempted to overcharge tourists. If you intend getting out and about in Lebanon, it is often a good idea to rent a 4x4 vehicle at Beirut Airport.

Beirut Airport

What’s the Airport Like?
The airport is considered to be among the best in the world having been rebuilt after the war of 1980 and then refurbished after the 2006 troubles. You could be in any European or American airport by the standards you’ll encounter. It’s set out as a U shape with east and west wings with jetways onto and off the aircraft and both are linked by what is known as the Main Terminal which houses the shops, restaurants and other facilities.

So are the Facilities Good too?
You’ll find generally everything you want at the airport. If you haven’t brought your laptop, you can use one of the PC kiosks at the airport and if you have your laptop, there’s free Wi-Fi in the departure lounge. You have a currency exchange and an ATM for ready cash and if you want something to spend it on, there are two café restaurants, the larger one busier and noisier that the other. Last minute travel essentials plus reading material can be bought from the small airport shop whilst for gifts for family and friends, there’s a shop selling traditional Lebanese products.

Latest Update from Beirut Airport:

16/06/12 - Beirut Airport's new international passenger terminal has just come online and the airport is actively seeking partnerships to become a Middle Eastern hub for flights to London.
