Gifu Mini Guide
What can you Tell me About Gifu?
Gifu is an industrial city but found in a rural location on the central plain of Japan. The industries are linked to traditional Japanese practices such as paper making and agriculture. Today it’s trying to expand its tourism industry by offering traditional sights that appeal to domestic and international tourists and to see many of them, a Gifu hire car will be necessary.
How Easy is it to get to Gifu?
It’s actually quite easy despite its location. Chubu Airport
is a short train ride away and has international flights although many of them are from Asian countries. Travellers from Europe should connect at Europe’s only airport with direct routes to Chubu, Frankfurt Airport
. Taking the train from the airport is cheap, clean and efficient and allows you to hire a car in Gifu if you don’t want the drive from the airport.
What can I see and do in Gifu?
There are several small factories making paper in the traditional way, many of which welcome visitors to see how it’s made. Cormorant fishing has been practised for thousands of years on the Nagara River and trips can be taken to watch the fishermen at work during the summer months.
Gifu Castle is a great place to visit for a superb view over the city and the countryside. The original castle, important in the unification of Japan, was destroyed in 1601 but was rebuilt sixty years ago. It's perched on top of Mount Kinka.
