Rome Ciampino Airport Mini Guide

Tell me What I can do in Rome Please?
Rome is the ‘eternal city’ and has been high on people’s ‘must-visit’ list for centuries. It’s not just that it was the centre of one of the world’s greatest empires because much of the beauty of Rome that attracts the tourist today dates from the time of the Renaissance when it wasn’t as important as city states like Florence, Venice or Milan. Places to see whilst there have to include the Vatican with the Sistine Chapel, the Colosseum, where chariot races and gladiatorial contest took place and the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain and the architectural brilliance of the Pantheon.

How do I get to Rome?
Rome has more than one airport and your point of arrival will depend on your budget. The best would be Ciampino which is only a few miles out of the centre and with good transport links. It is almost entirely used by budget airlines such as Ryanair, for which it is a major base, easyJet and Wizzair.

Rome Ciampino Airport

What is the Airport Like?
At nearly a hundred years old, it’s one of the oldest airports in the world still in operation but a series of upgrades to its four terminals over the years mean that although it’s nothing special from the outside, it’s modern and light inside with a good range of facilities.

What Should I do on Arrival?
There are four terminals at the airport and each of them has a public information desk should you require assistance. There’s also a tourist information desk in each to help you with accommodation and transport. For cash, Banca di Roma has a branch at the airport and several ATMs around the site. If you’ve pre-booked a hire car, the desks are located in the arrival hall. If you’re using public transport, buses don’t go into the city; instead they take you to the nearest railway station for you to continue your journey by train. Make sure you know the nearest station to your accommodation before you travel.

And What are the Facilities Like When I fly Home?
If you need assistance at the airport and have given the customary notice, staff are on hand to help. The airport conforms to EU guidelines and most areas of the airport are easily accessible. Once you’ve checked in and gone through security there are a number of shops and restaurants to please the shopaholics and keep hunger at bay. Most of the food outlets are quick bites and light snacks but they are tasty and satisfying. The main shop is the duty free outlet with a good range of alcohol, tobacco products and perfumes and other shops include a newsagent, local produce and travel related products shop. Wi-Fi is available for a small fee and vouchers can be bought from many of the shops at the airport or from the information desks.

Ciampino is a good choice for arrival for tourists wishing to visit the Eternal City. It’s only 7.5 miles from the city centre, a journey that takes less than 15 minutes in a hire car and leaves you the options of staying in a hotel on the outskirts of the city, travelling in each day.

What can be said about the city? There’s so much history as the centre of one of the greatest civilisations and empires on earth. If you run out of things to do in the city, then the surrounding region is also worth a visit.
