Prato Mini Guide
What can you Tell me About Prato?
It’s a very much underrated city and the second largest in Tuscany
. Whilst almost everyone who visits Tuscany heads for Pisa
, Prato deserves more attention. It has city walls and a grand cathedral that is a superb example of 14th and 15th century architecture. Elsewhere there are so many other renaissance buildings of importance that you’ll need several weeks to do them all.
How Easy is it to get into Prato?
Around forty miles from Prato you’ll find Pisa Airport. Pisa Airport is renowned for budget flights, especially with Ryanair who fly there from many European destinations including several in the UK
. You can get a train to Prato and hire a car at Pisa Airport
there if you don’t fancy the long and possibly unfamiliar drive.
What can I see and do in Prato?
How much time do you have? There is really a list as long as your arm of must see places so you’ll have to be brutal if there for only a short time. Begin by walking around the city walls to see Prato from a higher level. You’ll catch some great photo opportunities and get an idea of where all the important buildings are within the inner city. Once you’ve walked the walls, have some refreshment before heading to the Duomo, a stunning Romanesque-Gothic edifice with clever use of colour to enhance the local stone walls. A dozen or more other important churches extend the list as well as monuments and statues around the city attributed to famous sculptors and architects.
