Ramon Airport Car Rental - Coming Soon...
Eilat is due to benefit from a new airport in 2019 when the Ramon International Airport is due to open. The old Eilat Airport (ETH) will be taken off line and all existing services diverted to the new facility, Ramon International Airport (ETM), or to give it it’s full name Eilat Ilan and Assaf Ramon International Airport.
Why did Eilat need a new airport?
The old airport is very close to the city and some taller buildings are potentially at threat to aircraft movements, so the new airport location, some 20km north of the city remove this threat, but also allows freedom to expand in future. The new road network serving the airport will also make onward travel far easier to both Eilat and Be’er Ora without having the circumnavigate a busy city. Whilst tourist numbers to Eilat airport have fallen over the last decade with more and international arrivals being diverted to
Ben Gurion Airport, the hope is that the new airport will again attract international arrivals.
Who flies to Ramon Airport?
When the new airport comes online, it will be a direct transition of the airlines and routes from Eilat airport, namely just Arkia who operate routes to Ben Gurion and Sde Dov, both Tel Aviv airports and Israir Airlines who operate routes to
Haifa as well as both
Tel Aviv Airports. The good news for international arrivals is that Ryanair will be operating a limited schedule from European destinations as well as Wizz Air who will be operating from
Poland. Should demand increase, it’s expected that these budget airlines will increase their schedules to meet that demand and also likely attract other budget airlines such as Easyjet, which if came to pass would mark a significant milestone in Ramon Airports progress. The airport will certainly be capable of supporting such growth and is part of the long term plan for the region and Israel as a whole.
Much like Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion, 4x4 and SUV rental at Ramon Airport is expected to be in high demand and whilst the rental agents will have fleets in place to accommodate this demand, we still recommend you book early to guarantee availability.
