Jakarta Airport Mini Guide
Where is Jakarta?
Jakarta is the largest city and the capital of Indonesia, situated on the island of Java which is also the largest of more than 17,000 islands which make up the country. The islands are in the Java sea which lies between Malaysia and the northern coast of Australia
Soekarno Hatta International Airport
This is the official name for the airport named after the first President and Vice President of Indonesia. It was constructed in 1985 and quickly established itself as one of the major airports in Asia, today it is the world's 35th busiest and a popular stopover point en route from the UK
and Europe to Australia and New Zealand. It is also the base of Garuda Indonesia Airlines, who fly to and from Jakarta all over the world.
The Airport Facilities
The airport is divided into six sub terminals, each containing 25 check-in desks, 5 baggage carousels and 7 gates, although these are close together. If you are departing from the airport it is a good idea to check which terminal your flight will leave from to avoid unnecessary walking around with your luggage looking for the right check-in desk.
As you might expect from a large modern airport there are all the usual facilities to make your journey easier – large airy interiors, private lounges if you are lucky enough to be travelling first or business class, several food outlets, including the major fast food chains and of course lots of shops including duty free to spend your holiday money or take a present home.
The Airport Hotel
Jakarta Airport Hotel is situated right inside the terminal building, making it the ideal place to stay for a short stopover. It has comfortable rooms to enable you to get some much needed rest during a long haul flight. There is also a spa lounge to help you relax and a business centre and meeting room if you are on a business trip and need to work during your visit.
Around the Airport
The airport is located around 20km west of the city of Jakarta, an ideal way to get around is maybe to hire a car and there are many car hire companies renting cars to be picked up at the airport. Depending on your interests you will find many diverse ways of spending time in Jakarta from visiting mosques and churches, to shopping and of course as Indonesia is made up of islands, swimming and sunbathing along it's coasts.
